Convey the Right Training Information on Conveyor Safety

Train employees to follow these basic safety rules for working with and around conveyors:

  • Keep conveyors clean at all times.
  • Know the capacity of the conveyor system to prevent overloading.
  • Inspect conveyors on a regular basis, and do not operate if they need repairs or are missing a guard.
  • Never remove guards or other protective devices.
  • Stop the conveyor immediately if a problem occurs.
  • Know the sound of the warning buzzer indicating that a conveyor is starting up.
  • Never wear loose clothing, wear hair long and loose, or wear dangling jewelry that could get caught in the conveyor system.
  • Know the proper procedures in case of a jam, and know who is authorized to clear jams.
  • Never try to fix a jam while the conveyor is operating, and never try to clear a jam unless trained and authorized to do so.

Train material handlers who use conveyors to:

  • Wear sturdy shoes.
  • Wear a hard hat if there is danger of material falling from above.
  • Wear proper respiratory and eye protection if there is a dust hazard.
  • Keep the area around the “start” and “stop” buttons clear at all times.
  • Before starting a conveyor, make sure that all workers in the vicinity are aware it’s going to start and are far enough from it to be safe.
  • Never climb, step, walk, or ride on a conveyor.
  • Check and stay within posted conveyor load-weight limits.
  • Never reach into conveyor mechanisms.

In addition, train employees to always practice good housekeeping around conveyors, including:

  • Remove loose paper, cardboard, or other scrap that could get tangled in the conveyor.
  • Be especially careful to keep steel or plastic strapping away from the rollers.
  • Report any problems concerning conveyors to a supervisor immediately.
  • Shut down malfunctioning or otherwise dangerous conveyors and tag them out to prevent others from using them.

Train for Compliance—and for Safety’s Sake
Unlike many training solutions available on the market today, TrainingToday courses are routinely reviewed and updated to reflect changes in federal regulations or best practices. Each training course is developed by BLR® lawyers, industry experts, and instructional designers who have experience across a wealth of industries, topics, and compliance areas.
Courses keep participants interested with engaging audio, built-in exercises, and key points to remember. At the completion of every course, individuals take a quiz designed to test for competency in all the course material presented. Quiz results and course completion times are automatically recorded.
Every course can be tailored with supporting and custom documents. BLR provides supporting documents for courses that include complete speaker notes and the answer key for the included quiz. As the administrator, you have the option of displaying uploaded documents and requiring review before the session begins. This is especially useful for company policies or worksite-specific information. Supporting materials can be added, edited, or removed at any time.
With only a few minutes’ setup, your company will have a complete Web-based training program with professionally developed courses, employee testing capabilities, and systematic documentation of employee training sessions and scores. And remember, BLR® TrainingToday courses can be delivered at individual employee desks, in computer centers, at training kiosks, or even in a classroom.
No wonder BLR’s TrainingToday® was named “Best Workforce Training Solution” by the Software Information Industry Association. It can help you launch a cost-effective and successful employee training program.
