6 Best Practices for Online Learning

Today’s Advisor provides several best practices to help you ensure employee success when you provide online skills training.

When you provide employees with training in business skills, you want to ensure success. So what can you do? “There are certain best practices that all human resources reps [and all professional trainers] should keep in mind in order to make sure online training for employees goes smoothly,” says Harman Singh, CEO of WizIQ, a comprehensive online education platform.
First, learners need to know the technology. “Make sure all the trainees are well versed with the technology of the platform and how to use it. Conduct demo classes so the instructors and learners can get to know each other better,” he says.
Second, know the goal. “Make sure you understand the company [or] department requirements fully before designing an online course,” Singh recommends.
Third, keep class sizes manageable. “Never let a batch size increase to more than 25 learners,” he suggests. If the class sizes are bigger than that, divide learners into two or more sessions. “A smaller batch ensures that every learner gets personal attention from the instructor.”

Fourth, regularly solicit feedback from learners. “It is very important to analyze the impact the online business skills training course is having on the trainee on a personal level. Is the class effective? Are the skills helping them perform better? Is the class up to their level of expectations?” he asks.
Fifth, consider training’s impact on the organization. “It is also equally (perhaps a little more) important to analyze the overall effectiveness of the business skills training course,” Singh says, adding that trainers should get feedback from managers.
Sixth, do your homework. “Normally, technical skills courses have certain prerequisites. For instance, if the trainer has to use some specific software tool during the course, it is important to get the licenses and technical setup done so that the course time is not wasted,” he explains.

Online training is an “obvious choice” to boost employees’ skill sets and save money, Singh says, adding that “companies are looking for effective and efficient ways to train employees and get them up to speed on new skills without spending money on travel, training facilities, and equipment.”
