Retaining Employees—Five Key Tips

In yesterday’s Advisor, we found the first of the “15 tips in 15 minutes” from expert panelists at BLR’s Advanced Employment Issues Symposium. Today, more tips plus an introduction to a special product just for smaller or even one-person HR departments.

Burchell: Some good examples of retention-boosting programs that we have seen: At Google, 20% of time is spent on what the employee wants to work on; At Lands End, hourly workers can try out their jobs for 6 weeks; At one investment firm, all desks are on wheels, and employees can wheel themselves from project team to project team.

Brooks: Thirty employees are nominated each year for “origin trips.” The employees visit our coffee growing areas, like Nicaragua, Guatamala, or Mexico, where they pick coffee and meet the people. Many report that the visit “changed their lives” forever.

McElory: We want people to think about a career, not a job. We want them to feel that their value to the organization is increasing each year. We let people “test-drive” a job. If they don’t like it, no problem, we try another one until they “find a home.”

  1. Really enjoyed this article…and am thinking that the “origin trips” idea noted above would be a great thing to integrate into our own company’s customer service.

  2. “We offer pre-supervisory training to let prospective supervisors experience what the job will be like.” I don’t know why more companies don’t do this. Most employees will jump at the opportunity to be a supervisor (read: more money and power), without really comprehending what it involves or how it will change their work lives. I think it’s part of the cause for the “Peter Principle” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle).
